A machine rarely fails without giving a warning first. A drip under the belly pan, a soft tire, a loose step, a low fluid level, a cracked hose, or a new rattle can all speak up before the workday starts.


The question is simple: will anyone notice?


A morning walk around turns a rushed start into a safer start. It gives operators and service teams a few calm minutes to catch problems before the machine is under load, moving near people, lifting material, or working on uneven ground. It also protects production. A ten-minute check can prevent a mid-morning breakdown that parks the machine, delays the crew, and turns a small repair into a large one.


This guide gives you a practical construction equipment morning walk around checklist for a safe service check. Use it for excavators, loaders, skid steers, dozers, graders, backhoes, compactors, telehandlers, and other jobsite equipment. Adjust it to match the manufacturer’s manual, your company policy, and the conditions on your site.

Why the morning walk around matters


A walk around is not busywork. It is the first safety task of the shift.


Construction equipment works in hard conditions. Mud packs around rollers. Rebar hides in travel paths. Dust clogs filters. Vibration loosens hardware. Hydraulic hoses flex all day. Fluids heat and cool. Tires hit sharp debris. Attachments take abuse. By the next morning, the machine may not be in the same condition it was when it shut down.


A good walk around helps catch:


  • Fluid leaks before oil, coolant, fuel, or hydraulic fluid creates a hazard

  • Damaged tires or tracks before the machine loses stability or traction

  • Loose pins and hardware before attachments shift or fail

If the equipment was left on a slope, near traffic, or beside a trench edge, move only if it is safe and permitted. Otherwise, follow site procedure and get help. Never put yourself between a machine and a pinch point, a drop-off, or moving traffic.


Before inspecting, make sure the equipment is:


  • Parked on firm, level ground when possible

  • Lowered with attachments resting on the ground

  • Set with the parking brake engaged

  • Shut down with the key removed if required

  • Isolated according to site procedure before service work

  • Clear of moving equipment and overhead hazards


Wear the right PPE for the site, often including a hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility clothing, and safety toe boots. If the machine has been running, be careful around hot surfaces, pressurized systems, and rotating parts.


The walk around should follow the same direction every day. Many crews start at the operator’s step and move clockwise. The direction matters less than consistency. A routine prevents missed items.


Start from the ground and work up


Begin by looking at the ground under and around the machine. The ground tells the truth. Fresh leaks, broken parts, and disturbed soil often show up before anything else.


Check for leaks and fresh stains


Look under the engine compartment, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, final drives, axles, hubs, fuel tank, DEF tank if equipped, and radiator area.


Watch for:


  • Puddles

  • Wet streaks

  • Oil spray patterns

  • Damp dirt stuck to a fitting

  • Colored residue near hoses or caps

  • Fluid running down guards or belly pans


A few drops can matter. A small hydraulic leak can become a burst hose under pressure. A coolant leak can become an overheat. A fuel leak can become a fire risk. Mark the location, report it, and follow your site’s service process.


Look for broken, loose, or missing parts


Walk slowly enough to notice what does not look right. Look for bolts on the ground, broken lights, bent guards, cracked panels, missing caps, loose mirrors, damaged backup alarms, and worn decals.


Do not dismiss fresh damage as cosmetic. A bent guard may point to impact. A missing cap may allow contamination. A loose panel may fall into a fan or belt.


Clear debris from safe areas


Remove trash, mud chunks, wire, plastic wrap, wood, and packed material where you can do so safely. Pay close attention around:


  • Tracks

  • Tires

  • Axles

  • Driveshaft areas

  • Cooling screens

  • Steps

  • Pedals

  • Cab floor

  • Attachment couplers


Never reach into areas with stored energy, sharp edges, or pinch points without proper lockout or service procedure.

Inspect tires, tracks, wheels, and undercarriage


The machine meets the jobsite through its tires or tracks. If that contact point fails, control and stability suffer.

  • Cuts, gouges, and exposed cords

  • Bulges or sidewall cracks

  • Low pressure or uneven inflation

  • Bent rims

  • Loose or missing lug nuts

  • Rocks, metal, or rebar stuck in the tread


Uneven tire pressure can make a loader, telehandler, or backhoe handle poorly. On lifting equipment, tire condition also affects stability. Follow the manufacturer’s pressure recommendations and site policy.


For tracks and undercarriages


Track machines need a close look because debris and wear hide in plain sight.


Check:


  • Track tension

  • Track pads or rubber track condition

  • Rollers and idlers

  • Sprockets

  • Pins and bushings

  • Final drive areas

  • Packed mud, rock, concrete, or demolition debris


A track that is too tight can strain components. A track that is too loose may derail. If the machine worked in mud the day before, packed material may freeze, harden, or damage rollers by morning.


Check fluids before the machine gets hot


Fluid checks are easiest and safest before the machine has been running, as long as the manufacturer’s procedure calls for cold checks. Some systems need a hot or running check, so always follow the manual.

Clean around fill caps before opening them. Dirt around a cap can fall into the system. Use the correct fluid type. Mixing the wrong products can harm seals, filters, pumps, and engines.


If a level is low, do not just top it off and move on. Ask why it is low. A machine that loses hydraulic oil overnight needs attention, not just more oil.

Open service panels and look for early warning signs


Service panels give a closer view of the systems that keep the machine alive. Open compartments according to the manual and secure panels so they cannot fall or swing shut.


Look inside the engine bay and service areas for:


  • Loose belts

  • Damaged hoses

  • Chafing on hose covers

  • Wet fittings

  • Corrosion on battery terminals

  • Loose clamps

  • Damaged fan blades

Never use your hand to check for hydraulic leaks under pressure. High-pressure fluid can pierce skin and cause serious injury. Use approved methods, keep body parts away from suspected leaks, and call qualified service personnel.


Inspect attachments and work tools


Attachments can create some of the highest risk on the jobsite. Buckets, forks, breakers, blades, brooms, grapples, thumbs, and quick couplers all need attention before work begins.


Check the attachment for:


  • Cracks in welds or structure

  • Worn cutting edges or teeth

  • Loose or missing pins

  • Damaged keeper bolts or retainers

  • Hydraulic hose damage

  • Leaking cylinders

  • Bent forks or frames

  • Secure coupler engagement

  • Safety locks fully seated


If the machine uses a quick coupler, test and confirm engagement by following the manufacturer’s procedure. Do not rely on a quick glance from the cab. A dropped bucket or tool can cause major damage or injury.


For lifting work, inspect hooks, lifting points, forks, and any approved lifting accessories. Do not use homemade lifting points or damaged attachments.


Make the cab safe before startup


The operator’s cab is more than a seat and steering controls. It is the control center for safe work.


Before climbing in, check the access points:


  • Steps are clean and secure

  • Handholds are tight

  • Mud, ice, grease, and loose tools are removed

  • The door opens and closes properly

  • The windshield and mirrors are clean


Use three points of contact when entering and exiting. Falls from equipment often happen during routine movement, especially when steps are muddy or the operator is in a hurry.


Inside the cab, check:


  • Seat belt condition and latch

  • Seat adjustment

  • Mirrors and cameras

  • Horn

  • Backup alarm

  • Lights and strobes

  • Wipers and washers

  • Fire extinguisher if equipped

  • Gauges and display screen

  • Controls in neutral

  • Cab glass for cracks or poor visibility


Start the machine only after the area is clear. Sound the horn if your site procedure calls for it. Let the machine warm up according to the manufacturer’s guidance, then watch the gauges. A warning light at startup is not an invitation to “run it and see.” Stop, report, and investigate.


Test basic functions before joining the work area


After the static inspection, perform a controlled function check in a safe location. Keep people and equipment clear. Move slowly.


Test:


  • Steering

  • Brakes

  • Parking brake

  • Travel controls

  • Hydraulic functions

  • Attachment movement

  • Boom, arm, lift, tilt, blade, or bucket response

  • Service brake and backup alarm

  • Lights and communication devices


Listen while you test. Grinding, squealing, knocking, popping, or a new vibration deserves attention. Smell matters too. Hot electrical odor, burning rubber, fuel, coolant, or overheated brakes should stop the machine until checked.


A machine that “feels different” should not be ignored. Operators know their equipment. If the controls feel slow, the travel pulls to one side, the attachment drifts, or the engine sounds uneven, record it and report it.

  • No pressure to run unsafe equipment
